Together to make our community healthier
The Chinese
Nurse association (CNAA), RI Association of America (RIACA),
Chinese Christian Church of RI (CCCRI) and Star Chinese
Language School will work together to host this Minority Month
joint event.
The event
starts with a health education workshop. Speakers will include
registered nurses and medical doctors from the Chinese
community to educate participants about the Healthy Rhode
Island 2010 Objectives. It will emphasize the health care
disparities. Practical suggestions and recommendations will be
offered to the audiences to make our community healthier. Such
as how to add routine physical activities to your busy work
schedule, the choices and methods to help quit smoking, where
to find the best primary doctor in our community, etc. The
audience is free to ask questions thereafter and MDs and RNs
will answer their questions.
Free blood
pressure checking and blood sugar screening will be offered.
Refreshment will be provided at the end of this event and
small free gifts will be offered to the students.
Community Anti-smoking Art
Contest
Chinese Nurse Association of America awarded
a mini grant from Rhode Island Department of Health. We will inform and involve
the RI Chinese American community in spreading knowledge about
the dangers of secondhand smoke. The most effective method to
actively engage our community and the youth is to conduct an
art contest spring 2005. The contest will promote the dangers
of secondhand smoke awareness in children, teens, and their
parents.
The contest begins on February 19, 2005. It will be
announced at the RI Chinese New Year Festival at RI Chinese
Christian Church, emailed to the parents of Star Chinese
School students and posted in February issue of RI Chinese
Newsletter.
The art contest is limited to
participants eighteen years or younger. The entries must at
least an 11x16 inch poster board. All work must be original,
warn about the dangers of secondhand smoke, and encourage
smoke free environments. The submission deadline is April 15,
2005.
A committee of
kids, parents, nurses and local artists will judge the submissions for
effectiveness, effort and content. There are three cash prizes for the winners.
However, all of the entries will be displayed at the RI Chinese Health
Promotion Center and published in the RI Chinese Newsletter, which reaches
roughly 600 families.
